Frost heave is the reason so many driveways and walkways in this region crack and lift within a few winters of being poured. The base prep matters more than the finish: proper depth, drainage, and expansion joints placed where the slab actually needs to move, not just where they look even.
We do both poured concrete and paver work, and a fair amount of our concrete calls are repairs and replacements of slabs that heaved because the original base wasn't built for the climate.
